For as long as I can remember, being physically active and playing sports has been as much a part of my life as anything else. I was lucky enough to pursue a career that allowed me to share my passion for physical activity by training others to achieve their fitness goals. When this is all you have ever known, sharing in my clients' journey and successes in discovering their own personal connection with fitness and health became the most rewarding and inspiring work I could do.
The problem was that I was convinced that the most effective way to optimal health, despite your current state, was through more exercise. I quickly adopted this belief both for myself as well as for my clients and what resulted was a steady decline in my overall health and vitality along with the realization that many of my clients were not responding as well as I had expected.
What I did not understand at the time was the cumulative damage all my negative exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle behaviours were having on my health.
I struggled to get through training sessions and actually began to question whether I would be able to continue working as a personal trainer. Because of such severe gut pain, I could hardly keep on my feet for more than an hour at a time. I began to dread having to train clients and my career was in jeopardy. My lack of energy forced me to stop working out completely which left me depressed and frustrated.
The moment that changed my attitude was on a drive home from work.
My 10 minute drive home in the early afternoon was becoming more and more difficult as I found myself struggling to stay awake despite such a short drive! I became so exhausted that I eventually fell asleep at the wheel. Thankfully I woke up in time to slam on the brakes before drifting into oncoming traffic. Having lost a friend in high-school in the same manner, I knew it was time to make some changes.
What followed was a myriad of medical tests including blood work, colonoscopies, and visits with multiple specialists that provided me with no explanation as to the cause of my health complaints which left me feeling helpless. What I learned that day was that the absence of chronic disease does not determine your level of health and that I had to take responsibility for my own well being.
Functional Diagnostic Nutrition has provided me an alternative approach to regaining my health where mainstream medicine could not. Through functional lab testing, I have been able to uncover the root cause of my main health complaints and use a natural approach to eliminate those hidden stressors. The result has been nothing short of life changing armed with more physical energy than I ever thought imaginable, freedom from the daily symptoms of deteriorating health, and a new and more effective approach to helping my clients achieve the level of health they are striving for.
